Leather Repair - How To Repair Torn Leather Seat

!±8± Leather Repair - How To Repair Torn Leather Seat

There are so many different types of automotive leather seat repair, all with different situations and applications. There are holes, scratches, gouges, cuts, scrapes, worn or cracked, and just down right grungy looking leather seats. I think I got them all covered, well in this article we're going to talk about how to repair a small hole in a leather seat lean back, for those of you who don't know what a lean back is well it's the upper part of the seat.

Now when I say small this can apply for a tear up to 1 1/2" to 2", probably might go a little bigger, but lets not push it, if it needs to go to the upholstery shop for an insert then that would be better then a crappy looking leather repair on something that probably wouldn't hold anyways. When in doubt, insert it.

Prepping a seat is the key to success in any leather repair, and a lasting leather dye job. So, prep the whole lean back, and while your at it just clean the whole seat, why not, but you don't have to, with your prepping solution removing all grease, dirt, and grime. You need a clean surface and a well prepped area to work with. When I prep, I use a solution of rubbing alcohol, acetone, ammonia, and a small amount of TSP substitute, with water in a spray bottle. Spray the seat with the solution and scrub with a scotch brite pad to scuff the leather seat for leather dye adhesion and remove any grime that's on the seat, then wipe clean with a clean lint free towel. Once your clean, apply a grip base primer to the seat, I usually in most cases will dye the entire lean back when I do a repair or the entire seat, but sometimes it's not necessary, so you may not need to prime the whole seat, but do clean the seat good this cuts down on the amount of leather dye used and the ending result will be a premium leather repair.

Now to the hole. Lets say it's in a V shape, just for example. Like where you've gott'n out of the seat with something in your back pocket, ouch! I know the feeling, back in college I had a 1986 Mustang SVO, very rare and nice car (man I miss that car) and I got out to go to class with a pen in my back pocket and ripped about a 2" V shape in the seat, I about puked right there, and of course at the time I didn't know anything about leather repair. But now I do and here it is.

Sand the area around the tear with a 240 grit sandpaper, this gives a little more for the low heat compound to grip to. Take a piece of underpatch material and slide the under patch under the tear with a pair of tweezers, allowing about a 1/2" on the inside all the way around. I usually cut my patches in a circular shape, it makes it a little easier to slide under. You can use different types of under patches, I like the kind that is coated on one side with a heat activated glue.

Now take a drop of leather glue and spread a thin coat on the patch on the underside of the leather repair area. If the leather will lay down smoothly and match up then great, but sometimes it just won't. In this case we will use combo of the glue and your low cure leather repair compound and smooth a small amount over the patch then lay the leather down. Spread a small amount of low heat compound over the area and smooth it out with your pallet knife, remembering to keeping your area as small as possible, the smaller the better. Now heat the area with your heat gun, hold the heat gun out away from the leather repair and slowly move it into the repair area, this will give you just a little more control of the heat, you don't want to burn and shrink the leather. The idea is to cure the compound and get it to adhere before you cook the leather, it's a skill thing, practice makes perfect. Once the compound is cured immediately press the grain pad in your palm onto the repair, don't press to hard, but firm.

At this time using a wet paper towel apply a small amount of grip base to the repair area and dye with your color matched water based leather dye. Dry thin coats of dye, not wet. Then reapply and smooth out another thin coat of compound. Heat again and grain then dye, get the idea, what you are doing is building the repair up. Thin coats of compound applied and cured then reapplied, are much better then one thick coat. Once you have it built up and looking nice, blend the repair into the rest of the seat if needed, by applying thin coats of leather dye to finish it off. Drying between coats of dye with a hairdryer, and one great tip is rubbing the leather dye with your hands to force the dye into the creases of the leather helps a ton, don't be afraid to get your hands dirty. I say that but I'm allergic to rubber gloves, it bites, so I come home every day with dye all over my hands, it's a pain, but I love the work and the job looks better with a little bit of love rubbed on those leather seat repairs. After the dye is cured, apply a top coat of satin or dull leather clear top coat mixed with a bit of slip additive added for the soft feel. Dry the seat thoroughly, then apply your leather conditioner to finish and give the seat the juice it needs and a great feel and look for you.

Now there are so many other variations to this fix, sometimes I will have to use an air dry leather repair compound over the top of the low heat compound to smooth out the leather repair. Sanding it with a 400 grit sandpaper until it looks right. You can also turn your air down on your paint gun until little droplets are coming out to give it a textured look, drying between coats. Texture coatings, can be used, but if you do it right the gun effect works great. When I do a leather repair I won't give up until it looks perfect. Patience is a virtue, right. Don't get in a hurry, this will only frustrate you more and then you really got issues.

Leather repair is a craft and profession. The dyes and compounds I use are top quality and are made to last. Giving you a lasting leather seat repair, and comfort knowing you have a leather repair that will last and look great for years to come.

I hope this was some help to you, in the coming months there will be more articles like this one but on different situations on leather repair, liked I talked about in the first. There are so many different ways that a leather seat can be damaged, we spend a lot of time in our cars and well "sh$$ happens", right. So check back to see my next article on automotive leather seat repairs. If you have anything you would like to ask feel free to shoot me some comments on Leather Repair - How To Repair Torn Leather Seat.

Traktor Kontrol S4 Review - Digital DJ Equipment

!±8± Traktor Kontrol S4 Review - Digital DJ Equipment

I cut through the hype to show you what's really important. For me, this boils down to user experience and sound quality. These are what sets good controllers apart from average ones.

I prefer seeing the production model tested by real pro DJs first before giving an opinion.

The Traktor Kontrol S4 by Native Instruments is similar in that it's also a fully integrated hardware and DJ software solution.

It's a great size for a DJ controller. Not too big to transport easily (unlike the Numark NS7) and big enough to look cool.

It also appears to be scalable enough for both beginner and pro DJs to use with confidence.

What advantage for you? Stability my friend. The last thing you want is for your DJ mixing software to get stuck in a set and embarrass you, leaving you red faced and having to reboot everything. With everyone laughing and pointing at you.

Traktor Kontrol S4 review - 4 decks to mix with & 4 channel mixer

Many of you won't mix using 4 decks to start with, but after a while you'll start to see why having 4 different audio sources can be interesting. Using 4 decks isn't for a casual DJ who plays out once a month and rarely practices. It's for the guys and girls who want to add some creativity, splice new sounds into their mixes, mix 3 or 4 tunes together (yes people can do it) and basically let rip on the sounds.

I do like their 4 channel mixer function. That is Kool & the Gang! Good, sturdy knobs and buttons give you close control.

Having 4 audio sources also is great for when a new DJ has to hit the decks running with no dip in the beat.

Imagine you play for 1 hour, everbody's dancing, then another DJ comes on, or your buddy. You have to keep them on the floor!

He or she can seamlessly plug their audio source into the Traktor Kontrol S4 and play away without either of you sweating!

Just the dancefloor will sweat. You'll head off and get a nice cold beer of course, happy with your set.

Traktor Kontrol S4 review - the verdict

Pros This controller is great. For me, it's the fact that the DJ will enjoy him or herself and not get stressed and lost with the controls.

Having the 4 channel mixer is a massive plus.

I do think having a 24 bit sound card is a must and you should only be considering digital gear which has at least that.

It also looks extremely cool.

Cons

No scratching

I think that if you're a turntablists, you should consider using Serato as Traktor seem to be less adapted for turntablism.

Price isn't for everybody

The price is not low, but gets you good, high end material with reliable software that'll last you for the next 5 years at least, and probably more.

Have a look at it, see the user reviews and decide for yourself if it's really for you.

DJ Equipment - How to Choose Your First Set Up

!±8± DJ Equipment - How to Choose Your First Set Up

Purchasing DJ Equipment for the first time can be a daunting task. With so many different options out there, it's easy to get confused or overwhelmed. Here are some guidelines to help with choosing your first DJ Set-Up.

Decide on your budget.

Your budget is going to greatly affect what DJ Equipment you can purchase. This may seem like an easy step but before you simply write down the amount of money you would LIKE to spend, consider your reasons for purchasing the equipment in the first place. Is it something you'd like to try to see if you like it? If so starting out with an inexpensive DJ system can help you choose if you'd like to pursue it further. Is DJing something you've been interested in for years and are serious about? In that case you may want to save up for better quality equipment. It may be beneficial to make a larger initial investment, as starting with inexpensive equipment and slowly upgrading will definitely cost you more in the long run. Lower priced equipment can be lower grade as well, which can hinder your learning curve. Expect to spend at least 0 at the very lowest end, 00 for a super respectable system, and only up from there for more advanced systems.

Choose your platform.

This is where it gets tricky. DJing nowadays offers a plethora of choices. I won't pretend to cover all of them here, but I will touch on the most prevalent platforms and the pros and cons of each.

Vinyl Records (2 Turntables & A Mixer)

Back in the day this was the only option available with the rare exception of mixing between tape decks. This is also my preferred option. Here's why: DJing on vinyl is an art. It takes skill and perseverance and I believe that if you learn on vinyl records you'll be a better DJ in the end. No one says you have to stay to strictly vinyl (although that definitely is an option) but learning the art form on the original platform does definitely have its' merits. Besides the skill involved, there's also the searching out of music, which allows you ample time to explore genres, hone your "digging" skills, develop a relationship with your music, and talk to other like-minded music lovers. Not to mention that nothing says "DJ" like showing up with crates full of records. Obviously I'm biased here. The cons of using all vinyl would be carrying those crates full of records, the time it takes to find your music (no instant downloads), cost of the music, and the lack of helpful tools available readily on digital DJ systems.

Digital DJing & DJ Interfaces aka Serato, Ableton & Traktor

This platform has been gaining significant popularity ever since the release of Stanton's Final Scratch around 2004. Since then Rane's Serato Scratch Live, Ableton Live, and Native Instrument's Traktor are typically the most popular with numerous DJing programs available. Digital DJ Interfaces allow the DJ to control MP3s on their computer. The diffference between Serato or Traktor and Ableton is that Ableton allows you to control the music via midi controllers where Serato and Traktor use traditional DJ platforms- either turntables or cd players and a mixer. They all offer a type of "internal mode" where you are essentially DJing with only your computer. There are also many products that don't use any interface at all. The pros of using these programs are ease of use (mixing tools, crate layouts, cue points etc), added options and effects such as loops and recording, and ease of obtaining music. The cons are instability of systems (I've seen a DJ's computer crash in the middle of their set), the cost involved in up front purchase of systems and computer, and I've even heard DJs complain of having too much music (yes, there's such a thing).

All In One DJ Systems

These systems are all-in-one box sets that usually include all you need to start DJing. They can range from a turntable set up to an all-in-one midi controller with software, to a CD player/mixer combo. They can range in price from 9 up to 00+. Since these all-in-one sets vary considerably, it's hard to make sweeping pro/con arguments, but some things to consider follow. If the system is an attached turntable/mixer/turntable or CD player/mixer/CD player combo remember that if one part of the system goes out you won't be able to just change out the broken part and continue using the working parts. On the positive side, having everything in one package is convenient. On the negative side, you're limited in terms of customizing the individual pieces you want.

Choose your specific equipment.

Now that you know what you have to spend and what platform you'll be using you have simply to choose what brand and model of equipment you'll be buying. OK maybe not so simple. My best advice here is to do the research. Ask friends, colleagues, go online and look at reviews. Call your local DJ store and ask them what they think. Get overall opinions and feelings on brands as well as models. Research what is in your price range, and make an educated decision based on a combination of features, brand confidence, and product reviews. Remember when it comes down to it, there is a lot of personal preference going on in the DJ market. There are many great products to choose from and you can find one that'll fit your needs.

Don't forget the extras.

Now that you have your turntables and mixer, you can start mixing right? Wrong. Here's a short list of things you may need that didn't come with the main components of your set up:

-Headphones

-Needles

-Interconnect Cables

-Records/CDs/MP3s

And speakers! After all you'll need something to hear yourself on. But that's a whole other article.

Conclusion

There are many options available when choosing your first DJ set-up. First narrow your search via your budget, choose what platform you want to play on, consult others on what models to get, and don't forget the extras.
